1.deplete  vt．大量削减数量（能力、价值）,消耗；使衰竭

【例】Our funds had been greatly depleted at present.

2.undo  vt.解开，打开，使松开；取消，消除
【记】联想记忆：un（表否定）+do（做）--取消
【例】Caroline was trying to undo the chain to escape.
卡罗琳正试图解开链子逃跑。
What has done cannot be undone.
覆水难收。

4.vacant  adj.空的，未占用的；空缺的；空虚的，茫然的
【记】词根记忆：vac(空)+ant(…的)--空的
【例】 During the summer holiday season there are no vacant rooms in this seaside hotel.
暑假期间，这家海边的旅馆全部客满。(2003)
【派】vacancy（n．空；空白；空虚；空缺）
【辨】vacant, empty, free, deserted四个词都与“空”有关。vacant属正式用语，表示未被占用的；empty强调没有内容；free指时间上的空闲；deserted表示“荒废的，被人抛弃的”。

5.abolish   n.废陈，消除 vt．废除，取消

【例】The need to run the railways on time meant that local time was abolished, and clocks showed the same time all over the country.

【辨】abolish, annihilate，abolish一般指取消或废除社会制度、习惯、法律等；annihilate主要指使用外力彻底破坏某事物，如：annihilate the enemy。

6.smear  v.涂，抹（黏性或油性的物质）；弄脏（表面）；诋毁，诽谤，玷污，n.污点，污迹；诽谤，污蔑
【例】Our opponents have been spreading false stories in an attempt to smear us.

【例】I think I am engaged to Fred.

【例】Wood does not sink in water because its density is smaller than water's.
