【用】damn常用在口语中表咒骂，如“God damn it!”

4.petition  n.请愿；请愿书 v．向…请愿（祈求）

【例】The paraders petitioned the government for the release of the political prisoners.
示威游行者请求政府释放政治犯。

5.thesis   n.学位论文，论文；论点，论题
【例】A 91-year-old woman is to present her university thesis, written in the 1930s．to a museum.
一位91岁的老太太将她在20世纪30年代写的大学论文赠送给博物馆。
Their main thesis was that the rise in earnings was due to improvements in education.

【例】Your opinion discords with the principles of the meeting.
你的观点不符合会议主旨。
【用】discord一般指缺少和谐、不一致，常与with/from搭配。

7.profit  n．利润；益处 V．获益，有益于
【例】We can pro[U by the failures of others.
我们可以吸取其他人失败的教训。
【用】profit常和介词by或from连用，表示“从…中获益”。
【派】profitable( adj.有利可图的，有益的)

8.holy  n．神圣的东西，圣地 adj.神圣的，神的；献身于宗教的；圣洁的，至善的
【例】In traditional Chinese thinking, jade always symbolizes the holy.
 在中国的传统观念中，玉石总是象征着圣洁。
